In What Order to Apply Care: The "Thinnest to Thickest" Rule

You do not need to memorise ten layers. The order of care follows one principle — from the most liquid texture to the thickest, and sunscreen always comes last. A look at the logic with examples.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

The order of application scares beginners with long lists. In fact you do not need to memorise ten layers — there is one principle from which the order follows by itself.

Коротко

There is one principle: from the thinnest to the thickest. Toner/essence → serum → cream → (in the morning) sunscreen. Sunscreen is always the last step of care. Understanding the logic matters more than memorising the order.

01Why the order matters

Dermatologists note: the sequence affects how well the products work. A thick cream over a liquid serum is fine. But a liquid serum over a thick cream simply will not pass through it and will not work.

02The logic: from thin to thick

  • 1. Cleansing.
  • 2. Toner / essence — the most liquid textures: the difference between products.
  • 3. Serum — the active (if any).
  • 4. Cream — to seal in moisture: how to hydrate the skin.
  • 5. In the morning — sunscreen as the last step. In the evening — without sunscreen.

03Where sunscreen goes

Sunscreen is the final step of morning care, over the cream and before make-up. Do not mix it with cream "by eye" — that way the stated protection is lost. Let the product absorb for about 15 minutes before heading out: why sunscreen is needed and how to choose.

04Common questions

How long to wait between layers?

Usually enough for the product to absorb — about a minute. Waiting longer makes sense before sunscreen and before some actives, to avoid pilling.

And if I only have two products?

Then it is simple: cleansing → cream, and in the morning sunscreen too. The basic routine of cleansing, hydration and protection is already enough.
